Fallout 4 | Here There Be Monsters
0At Boston Harbor, a small boy named Donny Kowalski weaves tales of a sea monster lurking in the bay. The visible long neck of the monster gives credence to his claims, but not all is as it seems. The monster is actually a Yangtze-31 submarine operated by Zao, a Sea Captain of the former Chinese Navy.
Stranded in the harbor, he is a surprisingly welcoming man, especially towards an American soldier. Perhaps the guilt over nuking the Commonwealth using the missiles on board his submarine did, in fact, change him. And so did the isolation, after his Yangtze struck a sea mine not long after the Great War, the radiation from the damaged reactor ghoulified the captain and his crew. For two centuries, he eked out an existence scavenging what he could from the destroyed city and fighting off raiders, gathering intelligence and information that would, one day, help him repair the vessel and return it to Zhongguo, his home. There, he will rebuild or die. Whatever his fate, he wants to see his home, one last time. Trouble is, the Forged and other raider gangs might be a little too much to tackle for this ancient ghoul - submariner or not.
His only companions during these two centuries were his crew mates. Unlike their captain, they have succumbed to radiation poisoning and turned into feral ghouls. Zao couldn't bring himself to put them out of their misery.
This is one of my favourite quests in the entire game. Captain Zao’s Sword along with his Submariner Hat & Uniform can be had if your Charisma is high and you possess level 4 Pickpocket perk.
*** In a pure dick move, I regretfully slayed Captain Zao at the end of this quest to loot his handsomely stunning Submariner Hat & Uniform as my Pickpocketing skills were too low to keep him alive. ***
