Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game is a post-apocalyptic role-playing video game developed and published by Interplay Entertainment in 1997. It was the first game in the series and gave it its name.
The game takes place in a 23rd century world slowly recovering from a nuclear war. The protagonist, a Vault Dweller, leaves an underground complex inhabited by survivors to find a device that will provide the Vault with clean water. He must find himself on the dangerous surface, save his home, and stop the mutant Overlord from mutating all humans.
Fallout is one of the most famous games in the post-apocalyptic genre. In 2007, 10 years after the game's release, IGN listed Fallout among the 25 best PC games of all time, ranking it fifth.
At one time, the main feature of the Fallout gameplay was that the player has complete freedom of action. From the very beginning of the game, his character, the Vault Dweller, finds himself in a world full of dangers and adventures and is free to do whatever he wants - travel, seek personal gain or help others, lead a law-abiding or criminal life, carry out someone's orders. The game time is not limited by anything, except for the key plot task (quest).
