Welcome back to SHC 2018 coverage
this time we are playing: Cthulhu's Island
This game is made by: PineappleArse

Here is the entry page:
Press start at the SEGA screen. You have to press start, for as it won't cease without the press of the start button. Also, this hack is best played with the RF filter enabled, for as some art is emphasized due to it.

This hack again? For a third year? Unbelievable! To be blunt, this is just an art/level modification of Sonic 1, with various "pathetic" code changes here and there. If you want to skip my paragraph of "history", head to the paragraph after the next.

This hack, once previously known as Sonic 1 Back to South Island, was an attrocious hack, a hack made with ancient hacking tools tools for the SHC16, with very steriotypical changes, such as saturated palettes, a bland story, and of course, an amount of ambition that can compare to a ten year old hoping to become an (in)famous Minecraft YouTuber. Then again, when I made such a hack, I was only thirteen, and I was known as HyperSonic16. After the hack being seen as a poor excuse within the hacking community, I aimed to follow a simmilar theme of "winter", but I added a twist of horror to it, by plastering Terraria's Eye of Cthulhu all over the hack, as seen with various statues around the hack. Alas, due to lackidasicallness, as well as a limited time frame, it was a mere one act, with bland, repetitive foreground tiles, and a very purplish palette. Once again, it lacked positive reception, and it was a surprise it was even allowed within the contest. I also wanted to appease various streamers, such as SomeCallMeJohnny, as seen with the SEGA screech. Besides art, which was my intense passion, I also attempted SMPS, which consisted of instruments ripped from various games, and frakenstiened together to create subpar SMPS ports. Now with that out of the way...

Cthulhu's Island is a modification of last year's Sonic 1 Back to South Island, and guess what? It actually extends further than a singular act! Surprising, huh? The hack has one completed zone, at this time, Cthulhu's palace, which is a total revamp from last year. Acts 1-3 have differing palettes, and songs, so it's more or less a transition between fall/halloween to the desolation of winter. At the end of act three, one fights the Eye of Cthulhu himself, complete with a remix of Terraria's Boss 1, and custom sounds when injured. But since I lack knowledge of ASM68k coding, all I did was make the boss have more "health points", and "harder" boss layout, because fuck you! As for the next zone, Cthulhu's ruins, it is a work in progress at this moment and time. More or less may be done at the time of writing this out. Also, out of popular complaint, I have implimented the spindash. I would've made it the CD spindash, but I don't know how, so eh. Before I forget, due to time constraints, many music tracks went unused, to listen to them if you'd like.

Various aid towards coding: TheStoneBanana, Novedicus, VadaPega, Pacca, LuigiXHero, and various others around the SHC community.
Art: PineappleArse.
SMPS ports: Pineapple Arse, midis found on various websites. Patches made by me.
Drum Samples: BinBowie, LuigiXHero, Foxito.
Songs: Act 1, House of the Dead, level one theme. Act 2, Medabots robattle theme, Act 3, Wario World Greenhorn Forest, Boss theme, Terraria Boss 1, Level clear theme, Fortnite default dance (because haha, funny meme, right)? Invinsibility: Waluigi's Pinball, and the title: AoSTH Scratch and Grounder Theme. Mythos Factory: Midnight Motorist (I hate the game the song came from, but it's a nice song, though).
SEGA! Sample: Kookaburra laughing.
Epic idea of the HUD: Cinossu, Hyadoki, and Nineko.
Beta testing: Iso Kilo.

After three years of making this thing thing, I hope you enjoy all the changes that engulfed this hack this year. Of course, I would always appreciate criticism, for as ROMhacking/making pixel art in general is pretty fun. Stay epic, gamers.

Oh, and there may be a few eastereggs throughout the hack...
