Zoe’s story in Dreamful Chapters: Book One begins with her struggling to
wake up from her coma. But what if Zoe never woke up from her coma? What
if, instead of being in a coma, she is actually forcibly hooked up to a
dream machine, by the people we can presume have captured her after the
events in the first game?
The presence of the security officers throughout Stark are seen to
forcibly detain, harass, and attempt to control the citizens of Stark,
including Nela and Hannah’s gang. I believe that all of these people are
in a dream-state with Zoe, and they can interact together on a shared
plane of consciousness. Imagine like the Matrix or Inception, where
everyone is asleep in the real-world, but can all interact with each other
in a dream-like state, and whose actions have consequences in the real
world (such as killing someone or implanting ideas in their head).
How else could you explain that the little girl from Zoe’s coma-state, who
is hooked up to a dream-machine, recognizes Zoe when she sees her in
Stark? Are these people unwitting captives, like Zoe? Or are they merely
part of Zoe’s consciousness? Either way, it seems that when people are
hooked up to dream machines they are either unable or unwilling to discern
what is the real world and what is just a dream. The security officers and
Zoe’s therapist, Dr. Zelenka, are all trying to "keep the peace” according
to them, or, in reality, pacify everyone by encouraging them to use dream
machines so they can’t question what’s going on around them. This could
mean that they are working together to keep Zoe asleep, while the
citizens, like Nela and Hannah, are threatening to overthrow the system
and in turn Zoe's captors, at which point Zoe could wake up.
There are two separate times when Zoe is warned to “wake up”, once by the
creature that visits her in her dream state, and another time by Queenie.
Both times there is a sense of foreboding, as if something bad is
happening or going to happen and they are trying to break through and warn
her. Then, when Zoe is trying to find the unlicensed dream machine with
Hannah she says that she’s “fading”, does this mean that Zoe is on the
precipice of discovering that she never woke up at all?
It should also be noted that Hannah can see Zoe’s dreams, which means they
are connected somehow. If they are both hooked up to dream machines it
might explain why they are experiencing similar visions.
It could mean that they are both able to “lucid dream” which means that
the dreamer exhibits some control over what is happening within the dream,
and can manipulate their own imaginary experiences in the dream
environment. Some skeptics believe this is actually a state of
wakefulness, but either way those that can achieve lucid dreaming are
special, just like Zoe.
To add to the evidence that Zoe is actually a hostage to a dream machine,
her therapist Dr. Zelenka repeatedly tries to suss out how much Zoe
remembers about the incident at the factory, and to try and find out how
much Zoe remembers about the events that happened before her “coma".
