Broken Denon DVD-3800. Purchased brand-new by my dad back in 2002(?) for $1100. 5 years later, it starts doing this.

There's a design flaw with the disc clamping mechanism with this model. It uses a magnetic washer inside to hold the upper spindle and disc together. Throughout use, the washer wears down, which prevents it from holding the disc to the spindle securely. The "farting" sounds you hear are caused by the disc slipping on the spindle.

Of course, finding just the magnetic washer is almost impossible. You can, however, buy a whole new laser pickup assembly (laser+motors+lower spindle + magnetic washer, but it's almost $200.
