The Fast and the Furious franchise has been one of the most successful franchises at the movies. Centered primarily around the two leads of Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker as former agent Brian O’Conner. Starting off as a movie about street racers who highjack trucks, the franchise has continued to expand into a high octane thrill ride with ever increasing stunts and set pieces. It’s added some pretty big stars along the way despite having a hard time securing the original stars in the beginning. Now the series boasts Dwane “The Rock” Johnson, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Kurt Russel, Idris Alba, and now John Cena. Over the course of eight main movies and one spin off, there has been a lot of nods not only to racing and car culture but to the stars and filmmakers themselves. From muscle cars to the JDM or Japanese Domestic Market cars mixing it up with international thieves and spies to figures like Idris Elba’s enhanced soldier, the Fast and the Furious franchise has become its own kind of superhero movie. With Fast 9 on the horizon and the return of fan favorite Han lets take a moment to look at some of the hidden elements in the series to see where it’s been and get an idea where it’s going.
