FernStream LBP - Blacksea Odyssey - Sailing the Ocean Black
This was a first look at a game that I think is a few little details short of being downright amazing. I did have a second stream where I went into a lot of detail about my various thoughts and criticisms of the game, but sadly it wasn't saved. Quite frankly, I want to love this game to pieces, playing it is an absolute blast and it is one of my favorite genres (top down free range shooter) that I rarely see good games in. However, there's just a number of things that really hold the game back from being truly fantastic, first and foremost among them being that your progression through the game is entirely up to random chance. Your own skills cover about 40% of things, but the runes and items you get really cover the other 60%, so if you get screwed on good things showing up, you're just totally fucked, no two ways about it. A new patch has come out since I last played it (back in November or so, the patch was this past January) and it did address some of the issues I had, namely in that more and better runes will drop, and more credits will drop to buy things. The one thing I wanted most to see, however, a stable way to heal yourself that didn't rely on random drops, maybe something in the shop between levels, that's still just a dream. I still highly, highly recommend giving this game a shot if you're into this kind of top down shmup, but just be warned that actually getting anywhere is a very steep challenge.
