FEZ - Death [Sax Cover Story] | subversiveasset
While enjoying the haunting melody of FEZ's "Death", let's discuss the relationship between creators, their art, and their audiences.
FEZ is a very interesting game. Gamers have combed through the game to piece together its lore, when so much of it is not spelled out. This inscrutability seemed intentional.
Intention. Every created work bears evidence of its creator. In this case, Phil Fish is perhaps now notorious for statements he has made regarding FEZ, the development process, his demanding fanbase, and so on.
Some might point to Phil as a cautionary tale of what not to do, but is there something more to be said for the conflict between artists and their audiences?
(Video game cover musicians will be well aware of the conflict between performing straight covers and arranging more creative works -- the wishes of the artist to stretch out their arms and imprint more personality in their arrangements can run hard against the expectations of some audience members for a more conventional cover. And yet...performing a straight cover can lead to disappointments from audience members wanting more. How can artists best convey their intentions and desires to audiences, when many audience members will only engage via the media itself?
On top of all this, there is an asynchronous relationship between audiences and creators. Creators, often in the spotlight on social media (whether directly or indirectly through their works) seem far more public than the audiences. Therefore, audience members may have the sense that they "know" the creator, and may feel more at ease with making judgments about the artist, or being less formal than they otherwise might. In contrast, creators do not get to see the same glimpse into their audiences. And more importantly, once an image is set, the artist loses a sense of control over redefining that image.
