Plucking Wings is the battlefield where one can acquire the elusive Roundel Earring. Access to this fight can be found on the wiki, searching for "Plucking Wings". A player must reach the top floor of Castle Oztroaj [S], going through the usual lever locked doors to the trap door. No password hacking is required as the trap door is what needs to be selected to enter the battlefield.

The objective of the fight is to defeat Soo Luma the Ascended, a SCH mob, or as I affectionately call him Magus of Chrono Trigger fame. He is accompanied by a trio of cronies known as Roo Beju the Eulogizer (BRD, ie Flea), Jii Xai the Rimebladed (SAM, ie Slash), and Zjaa Boo the Wrathhearld (NIN, ie as useless as Ozzie). I also felt appropriate to use Chrono Trigger music in this regard, which also matches the fact a player goes to the past to complete these fights.

As a level 90 WHM, it is possible to super tank this fight with the power of Phalanx from subbing RDM. With a decent Enhancing set, one can reduce the physical hit damage to pitiful numbers. Soo Luma does use Tier IV spells and casts them more frequently than normal caster mobs do. Also, all Soo Luma's spells have a permanent Manifestation/Accession effect, thus -ga'ing all his spells. This fight would be simple if not for one fact simple fact that I will go into detail much later.

The fight itself can be split up into three phases.

Phase 1 - Soo Luma and gang begin their assault. The NIN (Ozzie) stays back and uses random :Ni's and ranged attacks, basically being a non-threat from the get go aside from the occasional Paralyze proc. He can thus be ignored. The SAMs damage is greatly mitigated by a solid PDT set and Phalanx. The BRD can be a threat with his dispels and elegys but again, can be ignored for the most part of this fight. I like to keep a Requiem and/or Poison on so I won't be affected by sleep for a long period of time. With a good MDT set and Shellra V, Soo Luma's tier IV nukes can be reduced to 500 damage easily. I encourage super tanking this phase as the extra TP feed from the mobs allows you to WS more frequently (akin to an Ochain PLD strategy).

Phase 2 - When Soo Luma reaches approximately 50%, he uses the SCH 2hr, Tabula Rasa, and begins to spam Ancient Magics (CHEATER!). At this point in time, Soo Luma is easily kite-able and it is more than possible to walk out of range as he begins each cast (I'm glad he cannot use Alacrity, or there would be hell to pay). Once his 2hr expires, we can resume phase 1 again.

Phase 3 - 25%. At this point in time, Soo Luma starts to use some of his deadlier TP moves. The one TP move that can totally ruin your entire game plan is Kamaitachi, a modified non-stunning version of a Yagudo Sweep attack that dispels EVERYTHING you have. Suddenly, all thought of super tanking this fight goes out the window as now you've lost all your ability to tank this fight. Without Shellra V, Soo Luma's nuke become significantly more dangerous and the damage from the adds become much more significant. To add insult to injury, because this is a TP move, Soo Luma is capable of using it multiple times. This is compounded by the fact that now he TP moves at every 100% TP, thus increasing the frequency that he may Kamaitachi twice in a row while you are still trying to reapply buffs.

At this point in time, keeping the BRD mob asleep is almost mandatory. A well placed dispel from the BRD can end in defeat, especially if a Shell V is dispelled while Soo Luma is nuking. If one can manage the MP, keeping the SAM asleep as well is also recommended, but I like to keep him up when I can manage him as he is still good TP for me. At this point in time, it's a race to see who can kill who faster. Take note that Soo Luma CAN Kamaitachi at any point in the fight, he just tends to wait until he is under 25% to use it, and it is easier to recover from this attack early in the fight.

My advice is to keep your MP pool topped off. Do not think of Hexa Striking unless you have enough MP to recover from a Kamaitachi. Mystic Boon over and over for the MP. Reapply buffs quickly and safely. I HIGHLY recommend a Red Curry Bun (even though I used a Yellow) to end the fight quicker. Good luck!

Enjoy!
