FFXI - When Angels Fall (Chains of Promathia Mission 8-3) - WHM Solo
~Please watch in 720p!~
When Angels Fall is the second last battlefield of the Chains of Promathia storyline and is generally regarded as one of the harder missions to complete. This is due to the fact that there are plenty that are highly resistant to sleep that fire off a variety of high tier nukes. Compound by the fact that these mobs can instantly regenerate all their HP and well, you have a combination for a rather long fight that requires a ton of curing.
The fight itself revolves around killing four Ix'zdei mobs. The two larger ones at the front of the room are RDMs while the two smaller ones at the back at BLMs. The most threatening spell from the two RDMs is their Dispel. If they Dispel your Shell, make sure to reapply it instantly. The two BLM type mobs like too fire off a large array of tier IV nukes and tier III -gas that can be mitigated down to 300-400 damage.
Focus on the BLMs first as they are the bigger threats of the two. At a certain percentage of HP, they will Manafont and begin using, interestingly enough, tier I nukes against you back to back. Thankfully, it doesn't seem like the RDMs can use Chainspell. At a certain point, these pot like mobs have a random chance to run back to their original pedestal. If they stay there for a few seconds, they instantly regenerate to full. Unfortunately, as a WHM/RDM, there is no effective way to stun them or block their progress, so just hope for the best.
I have a rule in this fight to not attack the mobs while they are "unarmed" (have no rings or staves surrounding them). Their TP move in this mode, Optic Induration, is a highly damaging attack that inflicts petrification. Generally speaking, getting hit by this leads to death. I just happen to be VERY lucky as apparently the third Ix'zdei was just, I think, boosting? in this form until I hit it then it decided to hit me with a rather damaging Optic Induration (normally, it only hits for about 500 to 600). Thankfully, the petrification wore off soon and I was able to recover quickly.
In hindsight, I feel I would've had a smoother fight if I used Barpetra instead of Barsilencra. The only reason I used Barsilencra is to prevent their TP moves from silencing me, but I feel now if I protected myself from petrification, the fight would have gone much smoother.
I also feel I could have sped up this fight greatly by going WHM/NIN and out racing the damage with my own (as you may have noticed by my dual wielding in the opening CS). I went WHM/RDM to super tank effectively, but in reflection, with a solid Mystic Boon set while dual wielding, I could keep my MP up fairly high while out healing the damage being through my way. Ah well.
Enjoy!

Beastmaster extraordinaire, this Tarutaru kicks ass and takes videos and names while doing so. His music selection is superb as well!
