Final DOOM: The Plutonia Experiment (UV Playthrough) [PC] - MAP29: Odyssey Of Noises
Without any doubt, the best 'city' themed map of the four IWADs. But then it's not without shortcomings; the most obvious one being the undeniably boring colour scheme.
That's right! We've got massive structures built entirely of shitbrix! BROWN EVERYWHERE. And this leads to another, far more irritating problem...
There is a huge lack of easily distinguishable landmarks/locations. You get one big red area in the centre, but everything else is just various brown buildings on green floor with crude roads. This makes navigating this place something of a chore; with everything looking so similar, you can spend a lot of time running around almost aimlessly while looking for one specific place.
But that's enough complaining about that, because there's the ever-present nuisance of Chaingunners being put in 100% bastardised places. There's also a couple of small Revenant Squads that are released with some Demons, but these aren't much to get worked up about. What is something to get worked up about it getting 100% kills; for whatever goddamn reason, there are a couple of targets placed well out of standard range - having to line yourself up and fire a bunch of unaimed shots in the general direction is the only way to kill these bastards.
Although sometimes the Cyberdemon (oh, there's one of them here, yes) takes his rage out on them if provoked. Let's face it, you would too if you were stuck on some poxy island. Speaking of which, he's really, REALLY easy to get rid of once he's served his purpose.
So, in spite of these apparent problems, is this a good map?
Yes. It's a very good map, and as far as the layout goes it's a huge, refreshing change for Plutonia. Gone are the winding corridors, the narrow catwalks over Damagesectors, the Spambushes of 1000 bullets, the starting surrounded by a gang of Hellspawn... the confrontations here are now generally toe-to-toe/claw/hoof, with no frustrating bullshit in the way and nothing that can be classed as horribly cheap suddenly cropping up and ruining everything in a matter of seconds.
It does have its downsides, sure, but these are trivial in the grand scheme of things. The overall result is that it's a hell of a lot of fun to sprint around the place snatching the last three keys, massacring what's also essentially the last lot of invaders in the game with whatever the hell you feel like. And as a bonus, as the map music, it uses the first track of the entire Doom series. Because everyone likes killing things along to 'At Doom's Gate'. They just do.
That's just been a fact of Doom since 1993.
