Final Fantasy 10 - first in-depth arena experiences

As I advanced the story, through a very boring part (no wonder why I spent 260+ hours in Lake Macalania!), I got Bahamut. With that, I was able to do more than 9999 damage for the first time, getting 99,999. Then, once I reached the Calm Lands, the arena was pretty much the first thing I went for and I began capturing monsters. With chimerageist available, I had a way to get "break damage limit" on someone as it drops dark matter on occasion. To get overkill and to more effectively handle chimerageist, to the point it didn't get a chance to act, I needed Bahamut. Once I got 60 dark matters, I could add "break damage limit" to someone's weapon. Knowing that Tidus was a major powerhouse to begin with, and knowing the capturing will go on for a long time to come, I figured I'd put "break damage limit" on Tidus's capture weapon. I was quite disappointed as there's still a damage limit. While it's not 9999, it's 99,999. I would have expected unlimited damage potential.
Once I got "break damage limit", I went around the various locations and captured 10 of everything. Due to the game annoyingly not allowing me to go any farther back than the Thunder Plains, I couldn't capture as much as I had hoped. Why can't I just bash through Guadosalem and do 99,999 damage to everything in sight? Forget getting sent to prison or court, just go around doing 9999 to everything in sight with the enemy or boss never getting a chance to act.
With what I had though, I opened up access to earth eater. When I first fought it, the constant instant death I was getting pretty much meant I had no way to survive. Not even Bahamut stood a chance as the frequent flare counters kept doing 9999 and I could only heal 1500 at a time. I underwent a lot of preparation, finishing Yuna's sphere grid. That wasn't enough though as Bahamut ended with 239 magic defense and 152 agility. By getting 255 magic defense, most any magic will hardly do any damage. With 170 agility, I get base speed 3, the fastest possible. Teaching Bahamut haste, protect, shell, cheer, and focus could all provide a lot of boosts. The end result? Earth eater turned into a complete wimp, to the point where keeping track of how much damage has been done is more difficult. I love turning characters nearly invincible and unstoppable (hint: note what I've done in Disgaea 1 - I can solo level 9999 enemies with no trouble at all (and virtually no risk)) - it makes things more exciting and entertaining to me. With protect and 5 uses of cheer, physical damage is reduced to only 1/3. With shell and 5 uses of focus, magic damage is reduced to only 1/3 as well. The reward? Fortune spheres and weapons with "triple overdrive". Fortune spheres meant I could activate luck nodes. With 2 "luck sphere" items that I've kept for a long time, that was another 8 more on luck. With Yuna's luck at 41, the aeons also get this high luck value as well, exactly matching Yuna's luck stat.
At this point, I'm after finishing everyone's sphere grids, getting "break HP limit" and "break damage limit" on the 4 most useful characters (Tidus, Lulu, Yuna, and Auron in my case), and a few other preparations. This will take a long time to do. Saving a significant amount of time is a nifty little secret with return spheres that you probably didn't think about. When using a power sphere, mana sphere, or speed sphere, you can target any adjacent node, right? Return spheres allow you to return to any previously activated node, right? So, what happens if you activate a node with a power, mana, or speed sphere then use a return sphere to go to that just-activated node? Yep, you'll be warped right to that node you just activated and, chances are, you'll be next to another node that you can activate with a power, mana, or speed sphere. Fortune spheres work just as good as a power sphere but usage is rare. What happens if there's an empty node then? In that case, use a return sphere to get to the just-activated node, as usual, then move normally, expending sphere levels. This basically means that every return sphere you get, which are extremely easy to obtain, you basically get a free sphere level (sometimes more than 1, depending on the circumstances. I demonstrate this very useful trick near the end.
