Locke and Terra will be forced to continue their search for the Espers without Shadow’s help, but it’s all good, because Strago is ready to step in as a permanent replacement for the mercenary. If you haven’t explored Thamasa, now would be a good time to do so. Hit up the shops to replenish any items that you might be missing before you head to the western mountains.

The first chamber of the mountain contains three exits: north, east, and west. The opening to the left will loop around and spit you out through the northern door. Pick up the nearby Healing Rod and go east; you should catch a glimpse of a certain someone as you proceed. The path is pretty linear: pass through the slopes; you should catch another quick glimpse of the mysterious figure as you walk. Continue through the chamber housing broken bridges and platforms; this will bring you to a room containing three golden idols. Walk up to them and watch the cutscene (hey, who is that near the door?). Examine the statues, and take a quick second to make sure everyone is nice and healthy, because the group will be attacked by none other than…

Using elemental attacks will result in powerful counterattacks in the form of strong spells (Firaga if you cast Fira, etc.), so avoid using offensive magic against him and stick with physical attacks. After several turns, Relm will jump into the fray, triggering a somewhat bizarre scene. When you regain control, use her Sketch ability immediately to bring the battle to a close.

When all is said and done, check Optimize Relm’s equipment. She comes automatically equipped with the Memento Ring relic; this might make you say “Hmmm,” as A) you should have a spare in your inventory, and B)the only other character that can use it is Shadow.

Proceed into the next chamber, where you will find a Save Point, and three curious patches in the ground. Step on the eastern square to drop into the chamber with the broken bridges. Navigate the fractured platforms to reach an outdoor area with an X-Potion. Jump across the bridges and follow the recognizable trail until you find yourself back in the room with the weak floor panels. This time, jump down the northern hole; you will drop to the western side of bridge room, which allows you to reach two new areas: The northern exit will bring you to a chest containing a Chocobo Suit; take it and go back inside, across the bridge to the south, and through the western door to grab a Tabby Suit. Equip Strago and Relm accordingly, and navigate back to the weakened floor tiles; step on the last one (the southern panel) to advance.

There aren’t any pit stops to make as you continue: just keep on the path until you come to a very large clearing. The group has found its Espers, and things are about to get a little hairy.

After some very important chit-chat, everyone will be back in Thamasa, ready to move into a new era of peace and understanding. The Emperor has abandoned his quest for power, the Espers wish for nothing but to coexist, and Kefka has been put away for good! Enjoy the epilogue and…

Oh. Damn.

After things get pretty real, you will be put in General Leo’s shoes. He’s sporting some serious equipment, but, unfortunately, you can’t have any of it, so don’t bother trying to alter his goods. Additionally, you can actually walk around the town while in control of him, but there’s absolutely no reason to do so: the shops are empty, and trying to leave will pit you up against the indestructible Guardian. There’s only one thing to do.
