The first episode of the Remake centers solely on the events of Midgar. Following Cloud Strife, a former first-class "SOLDIER", an elite class of fighters working for the "Shinra" Electric Power Company, a megacorporation using the planet's life essence, referred to as the Lifestream, as an energy source called Mako, and to make weapons in the form of Materia.
The game starts with Cloud, who has recently been hired by "AVALANCHE", an eco-terrorist organization, on a mission to stop the corrupted Shinra by destroying the Mako reactors in each sector to stop them pumping up the lifestream. The first mission is a success, though the explosion is higher than anticipated due to Shinra's influence (unbeknownst to the group). This sets out panic in the city. As Cloud navigates the streets, he hallucinates images of Sephiroth, another former high ranking SOLDIER, who was famous and notorious, who was presumed to be dead. At this point a flower girl asks him if he's okay and brings him out of it, giving him one of her flowers as well as her reassurance that he'll be okay. She then panics and asks Cloud for his help, grabbing his arm and showing ghostly black hooded figures flowing around them. Shinra soldiers appear and the flower girl leaves before Cloud can get her name.
After battling and being chased by the Shinra troops, Cloud manages to escape onto the train roof and catches up with the others. AVALANCHE then return to their base in the Sector 7 at Seventh Heaven, where Tifa Lockhart, Cloud's childhood friend resides. Cloud is rejected for the next mission despite Jessie backing him. He sets out to help Jessie who feels guilty for the blast and blames herself, and needs to go "topside" to raid a Shinra building to get a lesser explosion agent. This leads to a battle with Roche on bike and later the revelation that Jessie's father was injured in a reactor, causing him to be permanently comatose due to Mako poisoning.
After helping Jessie by causing a distraction while she steals the agents needed, they return only to find the ghostly figures from before attacking Sector 7, causing injury to Jessie. Because of this, Cloud is now onboard with the next mission. The plan doesn't go well and Cloud is caught in an explosion which causes him to fall through a church roof.
He meets Aerith Gainsborough, the flower girl from earlier and agrees to protect her from the Turks, members of Shinra, who are after her.
Meanwhile, the Sector 7 is attacked by Shinra after finding AVALANCHE, resulting in the death of Biggs and Jessie, two members of the organization; Aerith is then captured for her knowledge about the "Promised Land", which Shinra believes to be overflowing with Lifestream. Cloud, Barret and Tifa rescues her; after a motorcycle chase, they discovered that President Shinra was murdered by Sephiroth, who then suddenly appears. A fight ensues against Cloud and Aerith; they win and Sephiroth flees, with AVALANCHE planning to pursuing him across the Planet and Shinra seeking revenge.
