The Final Fantasy 16 hype train is rolling along, and I'm very much on board. But some of the discourse surrounding the game has been confusing to me. There's been a lot of talk about how FFXVI represents a "return to the roots" for Final Fantasy, meaning that because it appears to be set in a fantasy world, it's now just like all the "great" Final Fantasies of the past (and nothing like those "terrible" ones). Let's break down why that argument doesn't actually hold up, when you look at how atypical the fantasy has been in this pre-eminent JRPG series since the very beginning.
