The lizard men have the key to the marsh cave (bronze key) So first thing you need to do is kill them.

Once you enter the marsh cave you should go north first, going south is nothing but a waste of a mattock until you get the sickle. I never ask the "old man" for help -- You'll find out why later. It doesnt change anything, it's just a matter of principle for me.

After you get the sickle, you can continue south. It's pretty straightforward after that.

Once you get to Hydra, I would suggest using the battle axe. (I used the sickle to do something a little different.)
