Lynari Desert, Cycle 1, Year 5. Obtaining the Unknown / ? Element.

In order to make it to the second part of the dungeon, you will need to fall down the correct sinkhole (the rest just re-spawn you back in the first part of the level). The correct sinkhole is located to the west of the 'mushroom rock'.

This area is hot, so Mog will tire more quickly. You can trim his fur at a Moogle house if you want him to tire less often.

The Lynari Desert is the only place you can obtain the Cactus Flower. You can give the Cactus Flower to Tristan to lower his price for using the ferry. The Cactus Flower is a rare drop, and doesn't always appear. It is more likely to appear in cycles 2 and 3. I just got really lucky to obtain one in cycle 1.

The Lynari Desert is the only place where you can obtain the ? / Unknown Element needed to reach the final boss. Once you have the Unknown Element, you can take on the final boss any time you want. I don't recommend doing so this early in the game, though.

The Unknown Element does not provide any protection or resistance on the field, unlike every other element. It does however, allow you to pass through any Miasma Stream. For this reason, I will be keeping my chalice's element as Unknown for the rest of the game. You also cannot just select the Unknown Element from the world map like other dungeons. You will have to actually enter the level each time in order to retrieve it. You will only need to complete the puzzle once, though.

Gurdy's poems are the "keys" to unlocking the Unknown Element. However, you don't need to hear every verse in order to obtain it.

How to obtain the Unknown Element (you must complete the steps in this order):
* Gather Magicite of Blizzard, Fire, Thunder, and Life. Most of them can be found near the entrance of the level.
* Head North and cast Thunder on a large cactus. These special items can be examined with the "B" button, and will also give a small scene when you perform the right tasks.
* Head to the Northeast of the the map, and cast Gravity on a collapsed tent (remember, Gravity is two different black magic spells fused together).
* Follow the East wall of the level south until you see a rock shaped like a 'mushroom'. Cast Fire on it.
* Go back Northwest and and cast Blizzard on the triangle of rocks, starting with the smallest, and ending with the largest. This will unlock the final step.
* Go Southwest and you will find a white and pink flower along the West wall that wasn't there before. Cast Holy on it (to cast holy, fuse a black magic spell with a Life spell - remember, the Life spell MUST be under the black magic spell, otherwise you'll fuse Slow instead of Holy).
* Place your chalice on the white Hotspot that appears, and you will have the Unknown Element.
