Time for one of the most infamous plot twists in gaming. Not because Xande has called forth the Cloud of Darkness to return everything to the Void with his dying breath, but because we still have to traverse the true final dungeon with four more boss fights (thankfully with heal points after each) unless you want to commit suicide and try to face the Cloud of Darkness immediately.

The boss fights themselves are no joke as all four of them are infamous in FF fandom and do rely on turn order luck a little bit in order to survive. And, a reminder: In previous versions of the game- both the Famicom version and the 3D remake- dying at any point in here would send you back to your previous save point, most likely at the base of the Crystal Tower. So yeah, the twist isn't infamous because of the story, but rather how utterly painful a game over at this point can be in older versions.
