Final Fantasy IV - Part 1
1991's Final Fantasy IV was a game changer for the long-running JRPG series in that the story was more complex and fleshed out with substance (still far from what would come in VI and beyond, but that's beside the point), we were introduced to bigger side quests and also the innovative active time battle system that would replace turn based combat until FFXI - and one which will keep you on your toes, as you're pressured to make decisions quickly. Some regard it as the best in the series (for some reason) and some regard it as "the one where they go to the moon".
You play the comically named dark knight Cecil, who finds himself on a path to redemption after carrying out the king's evil deeds (later revealed to be under the control of an unruly fellow called Golbez). Through your adventure you find yourself joined by several new team members with their own unique and fun abilities rather than the job system found in III.
As in previous intallments, the soundtrack is beautifully reworked, and the graphics have a lot of charm - and autobattle makes things a tonne smoother than the slow-loading PS1 version that I originally played. My gripes are few... some of the side quests boil down to annoying low chance battle drops and the difficulty spikes are beyond unfair. But FFIV remains a great play, and the foundation that the rest of the series that followed was built on and improved upon. It also features the greatest insult of all time. You spoony bard.
