Doom Eternal - Part 2
2016's DOOM was a furious and intense FPS that took the OG formula of 'panicked move and fire at ugly as fuck monsters and demons', and amped it to 10 with a cool metal soundtrack. A pure joy to play, and it can't get better than that, right?
Wrong.
Eternal reaches heights that no previous title has reached since maybe Doom II. It has been lovingly put together in a way that every previous title is mentioned or referenced (bar Doom 3, which I'm led to believe is referred to in the DLC) and woven together in either well crafted lore or subtle nods. You will find yourself going out of your way to grab collectibles like OG Doom and Quake outifts and soundtracks rather than this being an afterthought.
The gameplay itself is absolutely mental, with the range of weapons and enemies forcing you to get good very quickly, and to get used to switching between weapons appropriate to the situation. In amongst the chaos is a real need to apply quick thinking and strategies if you are to prevent the imminent destruction of earth.
They've said that this wraps up the Doom Slayer's story - but if ID Software's next adventure to hell is halfway as good as this, then I'm on board. As long as they don't fuck anyone around like they fucked Mick Gordon around with the immaculate adaptive soundtrack.
