0Final Fantasy 9 Deathguise done with Level 1 Party*
Party was Freya (Dragon), Quina (Limit Glove), Zidane (Steal), and Eiko (support role).The asterisk here is for Eiko. For mismanagement reasons, she was level 2 when I got her and I did not feel like replaying from the point where she would have been able to be level 1. I already had to reset after reaching Pandemonium because of mandatory battles. So, Level 2 works for me. Functionally, she wears a Phoenix Pinon (for potential live save) and throws items--none of which are impacted by level 2 vs level 1.
This was the 2nd hardest fight in the run. Ozma was 1st.
Deathguise will open with Meteor. Sorry, you're dead. You can skip meteor, if Quina gets a move prior to boss. In all attempts, this happened one time. Quina is simply too slow. Assuming therefore that Meteor kills you, you hope for no swipe (full party physical attack) follow up. Otherwise, you are dead. Now, you hope for Phoenix Pinon. This is exactly what happened in my fight here.
It is a dps race. You hope that Meteor and Swipe don't occur a third time and race for damage. You can either auto-life or auto-haste/insomnia on Eiko/Quina. I opted for auto-life all the way around.
I deviated from strategy guide advice in not using Thievery, but using Soul Blade and Sleep. This can allow more than one person to sleep boss and is absolutely what I recommend.
