What should I talk about today? I'll talk about movies. Being from the Los Angeles area, I can't get enough entertainment. I love everything movies and entertainment. The truth is, movies and video games are my escape. It's amazing how a fictional character or a fantasy world can be so relatable. How their problems can instantly feel so similar to your own. How the way they deal with conflict can inspire you to tackle your own demons. How in a time when you start to lose hope and faith in good, it can be restored. I think it's always been why I've been drawn to things like Star Wars, Final Fantasy, and Lord of the Rings (and any comic for that matter).
I look at Harvey Dent from the Dark Knight and Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings and it brings up my point for the day. Harvey was a man who had lost everything. Having lost Rachel to the corruption of the city he tried to protect (and the schemes of Joker—played masterfully by Heath Ledger), he broke. How do you continue to be a decent person in such an indecent time? Samwise was a hobbit desperately fighting to not lose everything, most of all Frodo Baggins. What makes 2 good guys go in such different paths?
Perhaps it's people. I used to think that life was something that could be handled alone. It can't, and doing so almost always takes its toll on you as a person. Maybe you don't always need companionship, but you do need emotional and social support, whether it be from friends, or family, or both. I spent the last 4 months feeling more alone than I have ever felt before and it put me in a bad place (which I only just recently shared to my family). The irony of the modern world is how connected we should be with everyone, yet how disconnected and distant we actually feel. How we can laugh at the notion that we need to have a boyfriend or girlfriend, yet how we long for the day when someone comes along that can accept and love us exactly for who we are, for what we have to give, and for all our flaws that make us fallible. For guys, it's especially tough. We're not ones to go out and say "hey bro, I've been feeling kind of in the dumps and I need some support." We're just not socially wired that way.
With that said, I encourage you all to keep your friends close to your heart, to not be afraid to give them a call or to talk to them or just hang. My sister doesn't understand this yet, but guys don't necessarily have to say anything to understand one another. However, we do need to know that people are there for us. For those of you in High School, keep your good friends close, no matter how far college might take you. Don't be afraid to keep in touch. Some of my closest friends are still the 3 people I spent the most time with in High School, and my only regret is that we're all so far away from each other now. For those of you in college, keep your head up. I don't think it's uncommon to feel alone and isolated despite being surrounded by people your age. Find people you enjoy spending time with, and recognize how valuable that is. Don't feel as if the notion of asking for time to hang out with someone is a burden. After all, suicide rates in the modern world are surprisingly high, and I think if that is any indication, if you're feeling isolated and alone, chances are your friends might be feeling the same way.
If the Avengers can band together to save the world, I'm pretty sure we can do something as simple as spending time with one another so we can cope with life. By the way, the Avengers is a fantastic film and I highly recommend seeing it in IMAX 3D .
