Final Fantasy V was originally released on the Super Famicom in Japan in 1992, but that version was not officially brought to North America. Fortunately, a fan translation of that version is available. It was officially brought to the West on the Sony PlayStation port. Since then, it has been released on the GameBoy Advance, iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows via Steam. This playthrough is of the Pixel Remaster version released on Steam in 2021.
I have yet to thoroughly review this release of the game, but the font used with the Pixel Remaster versions of Final Fantasy is a problem. Fortunately, fixing it is very simple. One of the hallmarks of Final Fantasy V is its job system. Throughout the game, the party earns jobs from the crystals, and the job system allows players to use abilities from another job in their current job. Blue Dragon and Final Fantasy Dimensions have built upon this system.
In this video, I start with the game's title screens. Kind of jerky of them to remove the credits. Then, I start the game.
New Game (time 4:19):
As I start a new game, introductory scenes are played.
World Map (time 8:38):
After the scenes, we gain control of an unnamed character mounted on a chocobo. He starts at Level 1 in the Freelancer job. He is equipped with a Broadsword and Leather Armor. He comes with three Potions and the Memento key item.
He rides northeast and checks out the meteorite.
Tycoon Meteorite (time 9:39):
As our character enters the area, he automatically dismounts his chocobo, which is named Boko. As he approaches the meteorite itself, he finds monsters abducting a woman! He steps in and does battle against two Goblins. Just attack repeatedly to win.
After the battle, a scene take place. Our character learns that the woman is Lenna. The default name for our protagonist is Bartz. At the end of the scene, Lenna briefly joins Bartz. Lenna starts at Level 1 in the Freelancer job. She is equipped with a Knife and Leather Armor. She comes with a Pendant key item.
In the southeast of the area, the foliage hides a path. It leads to a chest that contains a Phoenix Down, which restores a KOd ally.
In the north, the party approaches an old man lying by the meteorite's eastern side. When the party talks to him, another scene takes place. All he can remember is his name: Galuf. Galuf and Lenna head off to find the Wind Shrine.
After the scene, Bartz is alone again. He returns to Boko, mounts up, and leaves the area.
World Map (time 15:11):
From the Meteorite, Bartz can only ride west. North of the forest where he started, he rides into a canyon. Boko causes a little scene, but then there is a shakeup.
Bartz rides north through the canyon. Along the way, he is attacked by more Goblins.
Bartz reaches Level 2. He also gets a Leather Cap as a drop and equips it.
As Bartz continues north, he rescues Lenna and Galuf. A scene takes place in a clearing to the north. Bartz agrees to come along with Lenna and Galuf. Time to find a way to the Wind Shrine.
After the scene, the party is mounted on the World Map. Galuf joins at Level 1 in the Freelancer job. All he has is a suit of Leather Armor. His fists are not good weapons presently.
The player earns the achievement "Take the First Step" for saving Lenna and Galuf and joining their party.
The party continues riding northeast. They approach a cave entrance.
Cave (time 20:40):
The party arrives at the Cave - Entrance. They go north and approach the opening. A scene takes place, and then they go inside without Boko.
The party starts in the Cave - 1F. In the first zone of the Cave, the party heads north. The enemies are pretty easy, though Galuf's fists are not good against the Devil Crabs.
After the first doorway, the party finds a recovery spring to the west. The recovery spring restores HP, MP, and status.
The party continues north to the Cave - 2F. The path is winding but linear.
Lenna and Galuf reach Level 2.
When the party ascends the stairway to the east, a scene takes place. A pirate unwittingly shows them the way forward.
Before climbing the last stairway, the party goes west. They find a chest containing a Leather Cap. Lenna equips it.
Bartz reaches Level 3.
In the northeast, the party examines the switch to open the door. Then, they continue north to the Cave - 3F.
As the party approaches the northeastern exit, a scene takes place. They see something that puzzles them. Then, they go outside.
