Story recap: The king of Tycoon senses something wrong with the wind, so he sets out on his Wind Drake to visit the Wind Shrine. When the wind stops entirely, his daughter Reina worries for him, and tries to follow on foot. A meteor falls nearby, and among the chaos, she gets captured by goblins. A wanderer named Bartz rescues her, and the two find an old man named Galuf lying next to the meteor, unable to remember anything except his name and that he also needs to go to the Wind Shrine. The three set off together and run into a pirate hideout, where their captain, Faris, decides to join the journey for her own reasons. She provides the use of her ship, able to sail without wind due to her pet dragon, Hydra.

The four arrive at the Wind Shrine to find everyone hiding from invading monsters. The machine amplifying the Wind Crystal's power was no longer responding to commands. Reina's father had gone toward the crystal room, but hadn't returned. They fight their way to the top of the Wind Shrine, and find that the crystal has shattered. A ghostly image of the king appears, telling them they they are the four chosen warriors, the keepers of the crystal essences. The other three crystals are also in danger, and they must protect them. The king vanishes, and the shards that remain of the wind crystal gather, infusing the party with the power of ancient warriors.

The party leaves the Wind Shrine and sets off through Torna canal, the route to the kingdom of Walz, where the Water Crystal is kept. The canal has become a monster nest, and in the process of fighting its denizens, Hydra is lost. The ship drifts without its locomotion, and ends up in a den of the undead among other wrecked ships lost at sea. The party escapes, and finds themselves in Kerwin, a port town newly unable to sail ships anywhere. Following some rumors in town, they climb a nearby mountain to find the king's Wind Drake. They mount it and take flight, finally able to reach Walz.
