Final Fantasy VI - stream 3
Story recap: After the three groups split, Banon's group arrives in Narshe first. The Narshe guards recognize Terra, so they have to sneak in through the mines, ending up in the house of the old man who helped Terra. His name is Arvis, and he's been trying to get the people of Narshe to join the Returners, without much luck. Banon explains the plan to have Terra speak with the Esper, and they wait in his house for the others to arrive.
Meanwhile, Sabin finds himself washed up on a distant shore in the east. He runs into Shadow, the mercenary from the South Figaro pub, who offers to join Sabin as his guide for the journey. The only way to Narshe takes them through an imperial camp set up for an assault on the nearby Doma castle. Inside, they overhear that both General Leo and Kefka are present, and Kefka is angling to replace Leo as the general. Leo is well-liked by the soldiers, but Kefka is definitely not. The soldiers get called away to join the assault force against Doma castle.
Inside Doma, the castle guards are unable to stand up to the siege. A retainer named Cyan comes up with a plan to fell the enemy commander in hopes that it will cause the rest of the soldiers to give up. The plan works, and Cyan and the Doma guards retreat to wait out the enemy within the castle walls.
Sneaking deeper into the imperial camp, Sabin and Shadow come across General Leo, who is waiting patiently for an opportunity to attack Doma in a way that won't cost too many lives. Leo is summoned by the emperor, so the Doma assault team is left in Kefka's hands. Kefka's plan is to poison the river that supplies Doma with water, and wipe out the entire castle all at once. Sabin decides to intervene, and starts a fight with Kefka. Kefka slips away while other soldiers in the camp keep Sabin busy, and poisons the river on his own.
Back inside Doma, Cyan witnesses the guards around him dropping on the ground one after another. The king has drunk the water, and Cyan finds him dying on the ground. Cyan finds his wife, Elayne, and his son, Owain, also dead from the poison. He flies into a rage and busts into the imperial camp. Sabin sees this and decides to help him, and together they vanquish the nearby soldiers. Before reinforcements can arrive, Sabin has the idea to steal the camp's Magitek armor and use it to break through.
Having wrecked the imperial camp, Sabin asks Cyan how to get to Narshe. The only route is through the Phantom Forest to the south. Deep inside the forest, they come across an abandoned train station. As they investigate the train, it begins to move, the exit door locking behind them. Cyan realizes this is the Phantom Train, which ferries departed souls to the afterlife. In an attempt to avoid their fate, they hurry to the front of the train to try to stop the engine. The train itself fights them, but they manage to get off at the next station. Before they can leave, departed souls begin to board the train, including Cyan's wife and child. The train departs, and Cyan takes a moment to mourn his loss.
Finally having escaped the forest, the party finds themselves at the top of Baren Falls. Shadow leaves to continue wandering alone. Sabin and Cyan jump down the falls, ending up on the Veldt, a place where wild monsters gather. As they travel, they run into a wild youth named Gau, who asks them for food. Not having any to give him, they take refuge in the town of Mobliz, buying some meat to take with them when they journey out again. They also hear a rumor of an underwater breathing device that would allow them to traverse the Serpent Trench, which runs from Crescent Mountain on the south of the Veldt to the port town of Nikeah. Unfortunately, Mobliz's breathing device had been stolen.
Back out on the Veldt, they encounter Gau again, and throw him some meat. They introduce themselves, and Gau tells them he'll show them a treasure as thanks for the food. Inside Crescent Mountain, he digs up a diving helmet - possibly the one stolen from Mobliz. Having little other choice, they use the helmet to cross the Serpent Trench, making their way underwater to Nikeah. From there, they're able to catch a ferry to South Figaro, finally putting Narshe within their reach.
(YouTube initially told me this description was too long, and I had to condense this recap further. So many important details to cram in to so little space.)
