We're at the end of the defense of Narshe, which means it's time to fight Kefka. The party goes to the Esper, which reacts to Terra's presence once again. She pleads with the Esper for answers, but ends up transforming into a pink ethereal being. She takes off from Narshe, flying around the map before disappearing.

In the wake of her disappearance, the party deliberates on what to do to find her. The party splits up, with a group searching for Terra and the other guarding Narshe. The search party takes Figaro castle to the western part of the continent. We get a special scene in Figaro since we have Edgar and Sabin in our party. It explores the brothers' relationship with the throne and the responsibility that comes with it. The party stops in Kohlingen, a town which Locke has history with. This is where Locke's love Rachel lived. She is currently comatose, and Locke is searching for a way to revive her.

They reach their destination in Jidoor, where the residents report sightings of Terra to the north. She's supposedly in the thieves' town of Zozo. The team investigates the town and eventually finds her. An Esper named Ramuh appears and explains that Terra is an Esper like him. He chronicles the events leading up to and including the War of the Magi. He tells them of the Espers trapped in the Magitek Research Facility in Vector. They ask how they can help Terra, and he requests that they free the Espers in the facility as one of them may be able to help her. Ramuh reveals that the most efficient way to harness an Esper's power is from the magicite left behind after they die. Ramuh leaves them his magicite along with others that escaped the Empire.

They run into the Impresario of the opera house to the south when they return to Jidoor. He mistakes Celes for the lead singer of the opera, Maria. The party learns that Setzer, an infamous gambler, plans to kidnap Maria at the opera. He happens to have the only airship in the world, which would be a great asset to help them get into the Empire. The party hatches a scheme to have Celes impersonate Maria in the opera to trick Setzer. The opera begins and Celes prepares for her surprise stage appearance.
