The Mako Reactor has been blown up. As we have seen by the end of Chapter 1, Jessie's bomb was not potent enough to do that kind of damage, yet Shinra and Heidegger made the reactor self-destruct to make it seem like it was done by the terrorist, Avalanche.
In this chapter, the crew see how it affected Sector 8 and are unaware of what really happened. But they must move on, believing they are saving the planet.
