But yeah, here's a test of RetroArch's Vulcan Super Sampling approach, where you can seamlessly blend 3D models on top of the low-res 2D backdrops.
I'm not an expert but you can set it up pretty easily following online tutorials.
Core: Beetle PSX HW
Bilinear Filter: Off
Renderer: Vulcan (do this via Drivers and restart retroarch)
Adaptive Smoothing: On
Super sampling: On
Internal GPU Resolution: 8x
PGXP operation mode: memory + CPU
PGXP vertex cache: On
PGXP perspective correct texturing: On
(also yes I accidentally cropped the bottom of the screen, that's not the emulator's fault!)
