The opening fight is intended to have more than three soldiers, but by killing them efficiently you can bypass the spawning of additional ones. The key is to target the leftmost one first--this puts the other two close enough together that Snow can kill them both in time.

For Shiva, first a note about gestalt mechanics. In COM, RAV, and SAB roles (the latter not seen in this fight), gestalt is boosted by the amount of percentage increase to the chain gauge. If there is no chain, the first attack in a string just adds to duration and not chain; therefore, it's important to maintain chain duration for gestalt efficiency. Here, COM is your best means of building chain duration, so we'll be using some amount of COM. By manually alternating abilities in COM, we can boost the chain more than simply spamming the same ability. In SEN, gestalt is boosted by a fixed amount for each attack targeting the SEN, particular to that ability. In this fight, the attacks following ATB Charge will boost gestalt the most, so it's important to "tank" those attacks in SEN (even though you can't die, thanks to Stiria's constant Curagas).

The pattern that works for me is: use Attack-Ruin-Attack. After the second Attack, shift to RAV and use three Froststrikes. Repeat two of them, and shift to SEN to tank Nix's first attacks. After they finish, shift to COM and repeat the Attack-Ruin-Attack, and then shift to RAV and Froststrike four times. Continue to alternate between COM and RAV in this manner until the second ATB Charge's attacks start, in which case shift to SEN. If all goes well, gestalt will be filled following these attacks.
