This game is quite highly regarded as one of the best horror games of the past decade or so. For being a horror FPS you immediately are on the defensive, expecting jump scares and monster closets.

And it's precisely the moment you let your guard down that the game throws a jump scare at you.

I dig it. My problem, however, is the game even though it's nearly 10 years old now, it was one of the first to use more modern effects and rendering techniques. I have to give it praise for pioneering some of the stuff we take for granted these days, but I also have to point out that being essentially 1.0 level tech, it's a bit buggy and makes it hard to play the game for any real length of time. The game will run perfectly smooth... until it doesn't. The worst was just seconds before being thrown into a fire fight, everything was running smoothly, and then it starts stuttering.

I've got a couple more things to try that I didn't get while recording this. One was a setting to restart the GPU when loading a new level/area. Which tells me that the techniques they're using are essentially leaking VRAM like a sieve. The next step after that is to see if it will run acceptably in a Windows XP virtual machine.
