First Impressions MV - Chaos EX Alpha - Decent Combat System - Bad Writing - Box Mapping Galore
How's it going everyone, in this RPG Maker MV First Impressions video we take a look at Chaos EX Alpha by Dak Games. This game has a nice battle system with some-what balanced stats, skills, and values. The game uses a side view battle system with Moghunter's plugins to show health bars and damage pop-ups. The sound effects in game are decent, they are minimal and fit pretty well. Custom battle sprites and even a custom summon sprite (albeit super small) was a nice touch. Even if it's a bit on the easy side, I felt like it was overall fun to battle. The grammar and writing in this game are atrocious. I got what the writer was trying to portray most of the time, however it was challenging to get through simple lines because of the structure and placement. There are a few 'show text' popups that ask two questions at the same time, with a single 'show choice' options. Which I feel is something you should stay away from. Some of the 'show text', and 'show choice' combinations were just not done correctly. You'll see what I mean and how it frustrates the player. The use of Lmatter (the summon creature) was a really good addition to the game. It was a cool character, kind of helped to hold the story together, and also opened the game up to give extra dialog. The game starts off super linear and some parts auto-run from one section to the next, which worked out better than I thought it would in hindsight. It opened up with some side missions once you get to the first (unruined) town, which had mostly very small events that put you in extra battles. It was kind of a cool addition to add more content to the game. The game is a bit lighthearted at times with naming conventions, but also dark and grim at the same time, with people dying and whatnot. It's kind of all over the place to be honest. The mapping in this game has moments of looking nice, but for the most part it's full of small box maps that are poorly made. It wasn't a bad game to be honest, but if you combined the fact that the writing was hard to read and get through, with the fact that some bgm contained lyrics, with sub par mapping, I would have to say, wait to play this game until it gets more updated. The battle system and amount of skills with action sequencing is good and it could be a really great game in the future, but as it stands right now, I can't recommend you play it. Thanks for watching. (Don't use default font.)
After going through the files included in this project I found a ton of custom art. So this game is clearly bigger than it looks. The artwork is super impressive (check out what I managed to put together with the thumbnail). I will happily replay this project again in the future after seeing all of this beautiful work. Thanks for sending me your project Dak Games.
