First Server Made From Scratch... Ish... $380 \w $1500 performance
Plz sub.
$1500, based on if you made a PC \w a i7 4700k & the hardware to go along.
Would be able to get a 2nd hand server with the same performance for $600-$1300.
My long ass sketchy adventure of building this machine... took a good 2 hours. not including travel time.
---
Just finished building my first server... from scratch, with each major part from a different machine... Soooo fucking sketchy lol.
The Case is from an old Dual SingleCore Opteron Server - Around the time of P3/P4 computers.
The CPUs came from Network Blades, so... they weren't even from real servers lol, ram came from there...
And the motherboard, was just from some companies garbage, with big fat letters saying, "May Be Bad," Also Known As, "I don't know what the fuck i'm doing, so i'm going to throw it out," when it probably had a bad PSU or stick of RAM.
Like usual, the motherboard did not have any heatsinks, so i drove up to memoryexpress and grabbed the ONLY heatsinks that would fit with LGA 1366 sockets, and that were not fucking 2 feet tall... they were stupid expensive $30 ea, after taxes and bs, $70 for both.
THENN!!! The heat sinks needed a special cooler master backplate, SO FUCKKKK, i went for dinner, then drove to home depot and bought a nice little power drill for $60 - it was about time that i got my own and stopped borrowing someone elses... i had a set of $50 cobalt metal drill bits, so i took it and drilled out the screw holes of the existing backplate, bent the cooler master heatsinks a little bit ( was designed to be bent-ish ), and screwed them in...
Was a very... nerv recking experience, taking a drill and drilling 8 holes into a motherboard lol, but was a 1000 times better idea than trying to rip off the stock backplates that were not designed to come off.
THENNN after assembling everything, pulling out crap from every direction in the case, the motherboard had NO Labels for the front panel, and on top of it the case's front panel ribbon was too short to reach it... So 20 minutes of going through a fucking 150 page PDF for the motherboard, i some how managed to find the front panel pinout where i found out it was pins 11 and 13 that i needed...
SOOOOOoo FINALLY i took my screw driver to it, stuck em between the pins... and pissed my pants as it turned on :P But WAITTT!!! THERE WAS NO DISPLAY!!! Well, FUCKKKK!!! Then i turned it on a second time, paying attention to the lights... noticing how they were moving in a normal startup sequence pattern... and BEHOLD!!! The darn board just took a good 20 seconds to startup lol.
