After Ubuntu 13.04 you no longer need mesa-utils/mesa-demos to see the device, but you still need to install it to get access to all of the glx* commands.
This helps identify if you are using Software Raster on some older hardware.

Ubuntu(in this video 12.04 Precise, I also tested it in 12.10 Quantal and it works just as well) doesn't come by default with mesa-utils, which is needed to show Ubuntu which video device is installed.
[ sudo apt-get install mesa-utils ] Package.
[ glxinfo | grep render ] Device finder.
[ glxinfo | grep OpenGL ] OpenGL version.
[ glxgears ] Test acceleration.

This should also work with other Linux distributions and their relevant mesa-utils/mesa-demos package.

I'll also take in suggestions.
