The idea behind FlatOut 4: Total Insanity is the same as its predecessors: a mix of full-speed races and mini-games where you have to perform spectacular stunts with your driver. The design sounds simple and it actually is. It is therefore the interpretation of those simple aspects that made the original FlatOut a fun game.
Gamers who have already played one of the earlier parts know what to expect from this series: mayhem.
Everything is allowed in these titles, instead of driving past your opponent with extreme precision, you just smash him aside here.
This is no different in Total Insanity and you can therefore enjoy yourself.
The main mode of the game is the career mode, in which there are three leagues, each of which involves quite a few tournaments and matches.
These consist of 'normal' races, races with power-ups and time trials.
Finally, you also occasionally get to play a 'destruction derby', where you are placed in a closed arena and the intention is to beat everyone to total loss.
There are also still other modes such as the Flatout mode.
In this mode you have to perform various kinds of stunts and score as high as possible.
This mode invites you to score better and better, because after all you want to get more points than your friends in the leaderboards.
There are a dozen different stunts to perform, ranging from catapulting your driver in a kind of "beer pong" like fashion, or through burning rings where your driver has to fly through as many as possible to score points.
There are also some Arena events, of course you can play these solo and go for a high score on the leaderboards, or you can play these old-fashioned offline with friends, where you pass the controller to the next player after each turn.
In my opinion this is a very nice and successful mode.
Furthermore, the game also contains online multiplayer, here you can play all kinds of events against other players, except for the stunts from the FlatOut mode. But luckily here you still have the leaderboards.
