Heroes of the Storm (HotS) is a multiplayer online battle arena video game (MOBA) developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It was released on June 2, 2015 for Microsoft Windows (PC) and OS X. Heroes of the Storm features heroes from Blizzard's games including Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, The Lost Vikings, and Overwatch; as of September 27, 2016, there are 57 Heroes in the game. The 57 heroes can be divided into 4 separate roles: Assassin (damage dealer), Warrior (damage absorber), Support (healer or combat augmenter) and Specialist (siege).
The game uses both free-to-play and freemium models and is supported by micropayments, which can be used to purchase heroes, visual alterations for the heroes, and mounts.
When players first start the game, they may choose from 1 of the 6 heroes provided in the free hero rotation, or can play heroes unlocked by using gold coins (earned in the game), or through microtransactions.
Players controls a single character in one of two teams in a 5vs5 player match. The objective is to destroy the opposing team's main structure with the assistance of periodically spawned NPC, which spawn at each teams base and travel down pre-defined paths toward the opposing team's base.
Players can also mount different animals, such as horses, lizards, or unicorns, to increase their movement speed, automatically dismounting when dealing/receiving damage or using an ability. Minions at neutral camps can be defeated to gain experience points, and mercenaries that fight for the player. Each map has a different side-objective that will help either team and deal significant damage to the other.
Unlike most MOBAs where each player levels up and gain experiences individually, in Heroes of the Storm the players share all experience gained for their team. When a certain experience point threshold is reached for a team, each hero on that team levels up at the same teim, acquiring slightly amplified powers and gaining a talent point upon reaching levels 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, and 20. Talent points allow players to customize and empower their hero's abilities and generally result in large increase in use, especially for levels 10, 16, and 20. This leveling system emphasizes the importance of teamwork and planning, since a player's action can affect the whole team.
Heroes of the Storm also features several modes of gameplay such as, Tutorials,Training, versus A.I., Quick Match, Unranked Draft, Team League, and Custom Games.
