FMV Showdown: Playstation MDEC vs Saturn Cinepak
So I've been helping Romulo out with his FMV playback module for his Saturn Survival Horror engine by encoding samples for him. In doing so I encoded most of Leon's FMVs from Resident Evil 2 to run on Saturn using Cinepak. I was curious how it stacked up against the original Playstation version so I decided to compare them.
Both of these are recorded from real hardware using Composite. The Saturn is a US Model 2, the Playstation is a US SCPH-9001 model. Both are the same resolution and frame rate, both are 24-bit RGB. Audio on Saturn is 16-bit mono 22050Hz, while PS1 is stereo 37800 Hz I believe. The Saturn version uses the PC SourceNext release as it's source files. The Playstation version is my personal copy of the Dual Shock edition.
Overall I think it turned out pretty good. While it does have some artifacts, there's also some noticeable artifacts on the PS1 release. Color wise Saturn came out a little warmer which could be due to the source files used, or my capture set up. I also used VDP2's Gradation Feature and chose to run in 320x480i mode which I think gives a nicer looking output.
Also for those interested, the Saturn version is using just the Master SH-2, VDP2, with sound being handled by the 68000 and SCSP. So no Slave SH-2, no VDP1, and no SCU DSP.
