Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney foresees a future where small teams can leverage AI prompts to develop video games on the vast scale of titles like Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Speaking at Epic’s State of Unreal 2025 event, Sweeney emphasized that AI prompts will become a "fundamental part" of game engines, leading to the emergence of "entirely new genres of games invented that weren't possible or practical before". He draws parallels to past technological advancements, such as the advent of 3D gaming enabling titles like Doom and Wolfenstein, and hardware performance enabling battle royale games with 100 players.

Sweeney envisions a scenario where AI-powered characters can offer "infinite dialogue" with minimal setup for creators. This capability, he believes, will enable small teams to craft games featuring immense numbers of characters and highly interactive worlds. He posited that within the next few years, a 10-person team could realistically build a Breath of the Wild-scale game by relying on AI for dialogue and only requiring creators to provide character synopses.

Epic Games is evidently fully committed to AI, a stance that Sweeney has openly expressed. A notable example is the recent integration of an AI-powered Darth Vader into Fortnite. This AI character can engage in spontaneous dialogue, respond intelligently to players, summarize gameplay, issue warnings, and even join or leave squads. This particular AI voice of Darth Vader, powered by Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash and ElevenLabs' Flash v2.5, is used with the permission of James Earl Jones' family, following the actor's passing in September 2024.

The use of AI to revive the voices of deceased actors, such as James Earl Jones for Darth Vader, has ignited ethical debates. However, Sweeney asserts that AI technology ultimately offers a net benefit to society, despite some initial drawbacks. He views AI as a tool designed to "empower human creators to create stuff more efficiently". While acknowledging concerns about companies potentially "ripping massive amounts of content off of other companies and individuals," he believes AI should serve as a "multiplying factor and multiplying force on our abilities".

Sweeney anticipates that AI will enable indie teams to develop larger and better games, and simultaneously empower AAA teams to create even more "staggering, immense huge games" with increased polish. He foresees a significant evolution as developers acquire new skills to harness AI's potential, ultimately leading to a higher net opportunity for individuals, similar to other life-improving technologies. Undeterred by any controversy surrounding AI Darth Vader, Epic has already announced plans to allow players to create their own AI NPCs within Fortnite.
