As of its release date, MindsEye has a complete lack of formal reviews, with neither user reviews nor curator reviews appearing on its Steam page. Despite this absence of official feedback, the game has been met with a generally negative reception online, particularly among Reddit users. This pre-release negativity has prompted the co-CEO of Build a Rocket Boy, Mark Gerhard, to claim that the backlash is a "concerted effort" against the studio, possibly paid for, and perpetuated by "bots and repeated replies".

Despite the developer's claims of a conspiracy, many Reddit users largely dismiss this idea, attributing the negative reaction to the perceived quality of the game itself. Common criticisms describe MindsEye as "generic," "graphically dated," and having "uninspired art". Concerns were also raised about the voiceover in an "explainer" video sounding AI-generated and containing "weird comparisons". The game is frequently characterized as looking like a "fake real game" or "corporate slop".

Further criticisms target the game's perceived lack of originality, with users noting "no hook," "no unique concept," and "no original feature or selling point," leading to descriptions of it as "boring". Gameplay footage has been criticized for "janky" animations, and the game is seen as a "generic-ass 'faux-pen world' cyberpunk game" or a "generic, semi open world action game". Some who saw early hands-off previews reportedly "didn't have a good time," with developers even needing "God Mode" to progress.

The marketing for MindsEye has also drawn significant criticism for being "very vague" and using "hyperbolic and 'bizarro' language". There are theories that MindsEye is being rushed out to fund the larger "Everywhere" platform, which is described as a "Roblox-like" creation suite. Additionally, accusations have surfaced that the studio initially intended to incorporate NFTs, with marketing language resembling a "pitch for a play2earn NFT scam game". Some perceive the marketing as an "obvious ploy for media attention" or a "PR stunt".

While overwhelmingly negative, there are a few less common positive or neutral mentions. Some users found the game "pretty okay" or "fiiiiiiine," not world-changing but also not as bad as the discourse suggested. One user even noted that the level editor looked "cool". However, the prevailing sentiment remains negative, describing the game as uninspired and potentially an effort to fund their larger platform rather than a quality standalone product.
