Siren (サイレン, Sairen), or Forbidden Siren in Europe and Autralia is not your typical survival horror game. Directed by Keiichiro Toyama (外山 圭一郎, Toyama Keiichirō) best known as creator of the Silent Hill series, Siren reminded me of some of the Junji Ito works like Uzumaki, where the player is trapped in a loop of death and rebirth driven by an unknown and inexplicable entity where there is no mean of escaping. I found the moment to moment gameplay to be frustrating when the game ask the player very specific tasks that require previous knowledge of the level and near perfect execution, but I understand the vision that the director had to have to make this choice, in fact the game is meant to be a slow immersive dive in a complex puzzle box that forces the players to take their time to fully embrace the experience of putting the pieces together in hope of escaping the spiral that traps the characters. I must to admit that, aside from the gorgeous presentation, the game doesn't do much to be loved, and I feel I can recommend Siren to people that really like slow-paced games and depressing horror stories.
