Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Movie Review
"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (2008) directed by Nicholas Stoller starts off rocky but is ultimately worth it and makes for a decent enough watch. It's not something I would actively recommend to most people but it is capable of pleasing those who can stomach it.
Peter (Jason Segel) has just been dumped by his celebrity actor girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). Peter takes a trip to Hawaii to try and forget about her, but Sarah is at the same resort with her new boyfriend Aldous (Russell Brand). Peter meets a kind hotel receptionist named Rachel (Mila Kunis) whom he begins to fall for, and this makes Sarah jealous. Peter finally finishes a piece of music he's been procrastinating on for a long time.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a raunchy late night comedy which starts off incredibly poorly but progressively gets better as the film moves along. Peter is initially an unlikeable, unrealistic character whom I felt less than zero sympathy for. As the film progresses, Peter ends up "switching places" with Sarah because we receive more information about their relationship and it turns out Sarah is far from innocent here, and so Peter becomes easier to root for and empathize with. Despite me eventually liking the film, it's still relatively formulaic as far as romantic late night comedies go and this one is not re-inventing anything, nor will it surprise or particularly impress you.
I hated the nudity in this film, I got pretty tired of seeing Jason Segel's penis and don't know why it was made to be such a focal point as it's not particularly amusing or pleasant to look at, and don't get too excited about Mila Kunis's flashing picture because it's actually a photoshopped fake. I did like the supporting cast a lot, it is perfectly normal for films of this genre to feature cameos, but these cameos actually got semi-major roles and showed up multiple times. Other than the four main actors, you can expect to receive some laughs from comedy favorites such as Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, and more. I initially hated the premise and plot of the film but I will give it credit for eventually winning me over and wrapping itself up in a satisfying way.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is worth it just for Mila Kunis & Russel Brand, as well as the cameo supporting roles. Peter & Sarah themselves are kind of the worst parts of the film, each carrying their own unique unrealistic problems and expectations which will certainly annoy you or at least slightly rub you the wrong way.
