Forgive Me Father - 35 minutes of gameplay on the Xbox Series S
Arriving over a year since it left early access on PC, Forgive Me Father is yet another solid, retro-style FPS that plays great on console - so long as you can accept the generous auto-aim, even on the weakest setting, is all but essential. Forgive Me Father is challenging, even on the "normal" difficulty, and you'll learn to fear projectiles and explosives above all else.
It's got Lovecraft-inspired cosmic-horror vibes yet feels surprisingly traditional in how it plays. There's a story you can ignore, red/blue/gold key hunts, endless ambushes, frequent arena battles, and a massive boss at the end of each act - all fought to the sound of roaring firearms and thumping soundtrack.
There are modern elements like an XP system and skill tree for weapon and player upgrades; a "madness" system that rewards aggressive play; some light platforming sequences; and a few abilities that really just take the place of classic special weapons. They never feel intrusive, so "old school" still feels like an appropriate descriptor.
