Formula 1 97, aka Championship Edition by Bizarre Creations/Psygnosis, 1998.

This is the (apparently rare) PC version of the sequel to Formula 1. Once again I'm using the dgVoodoo2 wrapper to play this.

Arcade and Simulation mode are completely separate in this game, I'm using the less cheerfully coloured Simulation mode, shown here. This game added an in-car view, which the previous one did not, amongst other additions. The game looks quite dark, as when it was released, the 3Dfx drivers artificially boosted the gamma levels, which I haven't done here.

1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 This game has a dirt-hitting-your-helmet effect (the black smudgy blobs that gradually appear). You can clear these by removing a tear-off strip (which I do towards the end of this video).

2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:31 The cameras in Formula 1 97 are a lot more like real-life TV camera angles, rather than the floating ones in the previous Formula 1 game. However, the spray effects are a lot worse, appearing late and drawing in front of the car (I tried it on two different Glide wrappers). The over-the-top thunderclap is amusing!

3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:42 Monaco is hardly different from the original Formula 1, so it's still really dark in the tunnel!

4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 0:58 This game has a lot more fog than it's predecessor, making it genuinely hard to see where to go! There's also some raindrop effects! And the almost-comedy-like thunder sound effect!

5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:19 The pitlane here is a lot more complex and longer to get down than in the previous game! I like the fact that new tyres have stickers on them (something you don't see these days, but you would have in 1997!). Pitstops themselves have far fewer controls than in Formula 1, you just choose when to leave (as fuel is added; in this clip you have to wait for damage to be repaired too).

6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:43 Crashes are much improved over Formula 1, with more car damage and cars that tip up in the air a little!
