Fort Emma, named after Rajah James Brooke’s sister was built with the aim of checking raids by the Iban from the Ulu Batang Rejang on the Rajang-Melanau and others who had settled down river.
The fort was originally sited at the center of the present town and was largely made of bamboo. A few years later, it was moved to its present site. The ground floor was not cemented and served as cells for prisoners who were guarded by the Sikhs and the Sarawak Rangers.
The first floor was used as offices by the Native Officers (Abang), the District Officer and other officers. The topmost level was the living quarters for the District Officers and accommodated VIPs, including the Rajah, on their occasional visits. Situated on the bank of Rajang River in Kanowit, the journey takes only an hour driving from Sibu
town.
