The 2000 SVT Cobra R uses a 5.4L (5,409 cc) naturally aspirated "Cobra" V8 engine with 385 hp (287 kW) and 385 ft·lb (522 N·m). SVT provided the revised intake manifolds, while the valves and a more free-flowing "x-pipe" style dual exhaust system were implemented to expel exhaust gases out of the engine.

The Cobra R has a very stiff suspension and a large rear wing to keep the car planted, allowing it to pull off nearly a full lateral G on the skidpad. 0-60 mph (97 km/h) is done in 4.4 seconds.
