Freediver is as close to a horror survival game as you can get without anything or anyone trying to kill you. This is purely about you surviving and escaping the environment, like the good old disaster movies of the seventies or eighties.
The games starts with you exploring cave systems for key pieces to unlock a deeper cave that holds a secret, this for me visually looked the weakest section of the game and felt much like an extended tutorial that taught me everything I needed when I entered the main game. So bare with the game for the first 15 minutes or so, because once you are inside of the ship it feels completely different, no longer exploration, very much about survival.
the ships details are nicely recreated, the objects in the ship such as books and lights feel out of place. But you are soon more concerned about where your oxygen is as you helplessly watch your colleagues drown in front of you. The feeling of panic and isolation this game creates is its strong point, whenever you enter a new location, the first thing you will do is search out an oxygen supply, be it an open hatch, break in the water levels or oxygen tank.
You can interact with doors and objects such as axes, which allow you to break glass or locks and move on to the next location.
I have also played the game on PSVR and you can definitely tell that there is a downgrade visually, with some areas being too dark on the Quest to clearly see locations, but for me the controls worked better on the Quest, the tracking seemed much more consistent.
At times during the game you will become disorientated, forget the location of the oxygen or stray too far from it for too long and this is were the panic sets in as you try to scramble your way over debris, swim against strong currents and avoid falling objects.
Enjoy this game for what it is, forgive its faults and play one of the only disaster adventure games available in VR.
