Freewing J-10 Fights Turbulent Winds! ✈️ Low Altitude Flight Display
This is the 8S FREEWING 90mm EDF J-10, an absolutely fantastic RC Jet!!! This jet is an absolute banger of a model aircraft, it flies phenomenal and features amazing scale detail and functionality (such as working canards, full span elevons and realistic landing gear)!! Watch me perform a low altitude, airshow-like flight display with it!
On the downside, as you can see here, on this day the jet was fighting with turbulence, which made it wing rock a lot, even despite using a gyro.
That day we didn't have any clouds, so I chose to fly very low so the video would still be interesting. This implied sacrificing most of my usual post stall maneuvers, but it provided some really cool shots with the gorgeous background landscape in return!
Here are a few points that make the Freewing J-10 unique: it features full span split elevons, giving it more authority for extreme post-stall maneuvers and does better knife edge than most jets of this type. It does really shine in high alpha stability and performs really decent flat spins even without a thrust vectoring nozzle. It takes-off and lands very easy but it's easy to capsize on the ground though if you are not careful because of the narrow wheel base. Also, the landing speed is a bit higher than usual (at least on the 8S version).
These were flights 15th to 17th on 'Fei', as I ended up naming her. ;)
Pilot: RC4ever
Ground video: Luis Ibáñez
Airfield: Aeròdrom d'Avinyonet
J-10 SPECS:
Wingspan: 940mm
Length: 1530mm
Flying Weight: 3800g aprox
Ducted Fan: 90mm, 12 blade
Motor: 8S Brushless inrunner 4075 - 1350kv
ESC: Freewing 120A w/ Thrust reversing
UBEC: Turnigy 8-15A
Servos: Replaced the canard servos by Hobbyking HK922 ones, which have better resolution, but the centering is poor so I'll change them too, left everything else stock.
Receiver: FrSky X8R
Main battery: HRB 2x 4S (8S) 4200mAh
Receiver battery: CNHL 2S 650mAh
Gyros:
GWS PG-03 on the canards
HobbyEagle A3Mini for elevons and rudder
SETUP:
Elevons work together in pitch, but only the outer part does roll (at least for the time being, but I plan on changing that). Canards work only in pitch, Rudder does rudder. Full throws everywhere, huge expo (around 70-85%). Canards are mostly driven by the PG-03 gyro at full gain unless I make harsh inputs. I left the mixing board in this time in order to be able to apply the gyro corrections to all the elevon servos (A3Mini has limited output options). Pilot figure removed. Wires tidied up and one 4S battery slammed all the way back in the foam cavity aft of the battery compartment. I power the electronics from a separate 2S Li-Po through a TGY 8A UBEC. The HobbyEagle gyro has more moderate gains on all control surfaces in rate mode. CG is currently roughly about 20-30mm behind the wing molded CG marks... and that's about it! More info soon... (maybe). ^^
