From Cardinals Cheerleader to Sitcom Star: The Journey of Phyllis Smith
Before she became a fan-favorite on one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time, Phyllis Smith was cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1970s. Born and raised in St. Louis, she began dancing at a young age and eventually earned a spot on the Cardinals’ cheerleading squad, even traveling with the team to some away games.
After her time as a cheerleader, Smith spent several years performing as a burlesque dancer and even gave telemarketing a try—though she quickly realized that wasn’t the path for her.
In the early 2000s, she made a bold move to Los Angeles to pursue acting. While working behind the scenes as a casting associate for The Office, Smith impressed the show's director with the way she read lines with auditioning actors. Her natural comedic timing and warm presence stood out so much that the role of Phyllis Lapin was created just for her.
The rest, as fans know, is sitcom history.
