John Carpenter Doesn’t Hold Back on Rob Zombie’s Halloween Remake
When it comes to the Halloween franchise, John Carpenter has always been upfront: the only film that truly matters to him is the one he made back in 1978. The original Halloween is a horror classic — minimalist, eerie, and soaked in suspense. But if there's one version of Michael Myers that really rubs Carpenter the wrong way, it’s Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake.
During a candid Q&A at the New York Film Academy in 2011, Carpenter didn't mince words. While discussing the franchise, he admitted that Zombie’s take on the iconic slasher “makes [his] butthole clench.” And the bad blood isn’t just about artistic differences — it’s personal.
Carpenter explained that during a Biography Channel feature, Rob Zombie allegedly claimed that Carpenter was cold and dismissive when Zombie told him he was remaking Halloween. But according to Carpenter, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“I said, make it your own movie, man. This is yours now. Don’t worry about me. I was incredibly supportive,” Carpenter told the audience.
“Why that piece of shit lied, I don’t know.”
Beyond the drama, Carpenter took issue with the direction of Zombie’s film. He criticized the decision to dive deep into Michael Myers’ backstory — something he believes stripped the character of his mystique.
“He’s supposed to be a force of nature,” Carpenter said. “Almost supernatural. I don’t care about why he is the way he is.”
In true Carpenter fashion, he wrapped it up with a blunt take: Zombie’s Michael Myers was just too big and too human. And for the creator of the original Shape, that’s a dealbreaker.
