The company operated mainly in big cities such as Delhi and Bengaluru, where it offered app-based rides with a fleet of electric cars. For a while, it gained attention for promoting zero-emission rides and better driver treatment compared to other cab platforms.
However, in early 2025, BluSmart ran into serious financial and legal troubles. The company suddenly stopped accepting bookings and suspended operations. Soon after, news broke that BluSmart’s founders were being investigated for financial misconduct. There were accusations that company funds meant for buying and maintaining electric cars had been misused or diverted for personal use. India’s market regulator also barred the founders from trading in the securities market.
As the situation worsened, BluSmart’s social media accounts posted messages saying the company had been effectively shut down since February 2025. The posts mentioned that employees had not received their salaries for several months and that customers would not get refunds for the money left in their in-app wallets. Many drivers and staff members were left without income, and customers were angry about losing their prepaid balances.
Following the shutdown, lenders and leasing companies who had provided vehicles to BluSmart began repossessing and selling the electric cars to recover their money. The company’s collapse raised larger questions about financial transparency in startups and the risks of keeping customer funds in ride-hailing apps. What began as a promising clean-mobility venture ended abruptly, leaving behind unpaid workers, disappointed users, and concerns about how such problems could be prevented in the future.
