Can and should we separate the artist from the art?
In the wake of the Weinstein scandal, many called for a boycott of the films of Roman Polanski and Woody Allen. Yet 20th century literary critics encouraged us to look at the text alone, and cited "the death of the author". Can and should we separate the artist from the art? Are the misdeeds of writers, thinkers and artists irrelevant to their work? Or should we excise the morally indefensible?
Stanley Fish: Literary critic and legal scholar, Fish regularly contributes to the New York Times. He is the author of Winning Arguments, and a member of the IAI Advisory Board.
Emma Sulkowicz: Activist and performance artist, Sulkowicz is famous for the pieces Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight), Ceci N'est Pas Un Viol, and Self-Portrait.
Nell Stevens: Novelist and Goldsmiths lecturer, Stevens is the author of Bleaker House and Mrs Gaskell & Me. She has also written for the Guardian, the Sunday Times, and Vogue.
John Harvey: a Cambridge Life Fellow and an expert on visual culture. His books include The Poetics of Sight, The Story of Black, and his latest novel, The Subject of a Portrait.
